After receiving his Master's Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Paolo joined national utility company ENEL to work on the realisation of a parallel real-time supercomputer. He then obtained a PhD in Computer Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, later becoming an associate professor.

Paolo has published widely on systems architecture, network-based processing, performance evaluation in video streaming, and signal reconstruction. Author of Embedded Enterprise Information Systems (McGraw-Hill, 2007), he was Editor-in-Chief of Euromicro's Journal of Systems Architecture, published through Elsevier, from 2001 to 2005, and is currently Guest Editor of "Special Issues on Parallel Distributed and Network-Based Processing" in Elsevier's Journal of Systems Architecture.
