Our client, AlienVault has conducted a survey showing that only 2% of companies (of a sample of 300 from the EU) would make a data breach public. While perhaps unsurprising, given the impending European Commission data protection law overhaul that will see companies fined up to 2% of their revenues if they suffer a data breach- meaning that they would not only suffer a monetary loss, but potentially a loss of reputation as well. This raises interesting questions for the pr community, too. Are you prepared for a scenario where your client suffers a data breach? Would you advise your client to go public?
